AU BACKGROUND: During Marceline’s early childhood, her family was struggling to get by. As she grew up, her father’s business (through judicious use of his own mutant powers, although Marceline didn’t know that then) grew exponentially, eventually providing them with enough money to live very comfortably.
It was in the middle of this that Marceline’s mutation manifested, although at the time it amounted only to her skin turning grey and gaining the ability to fly. Her father, who had had to hide his mutation throughout his life, was delighted for the chance to have a visible mutant at the head of his company someday, and immediately started trying to groom Marceline to take over after he retired.
Marceline wanted nothing to do with his business, instead hoping to be a musician, but she enjoyed spending time with her father, so she put up with it for the moment and taught herself to play the bass on the sly. She managed to get very good and find a band without her father knowing, up until she was 18.
Her dad found one of her band’s posters, and the resulting confrontation triggered Marceline’s secondary mutation—in equal parts anger and hurt, she inadvertently transformed into a gigantic bat monster in the middle of the room. Marceline didn’t wait for her father’s reaction (although she did manage to turn back into her regular form) before shoving her things in a bag and fleeing to a bandmate’s house. She stayed there for just over a week, then decided to hightail it to Genosha.
PERSONALITY: Marceline comes across as the standard “wild rocker chick”—she’s a daredevil, rarely seen without her axe bass, and she delights in being abrasive to friends and strangers alike. She’s not terribly subtle, though; she hangs all over the people she enjoys being around, and enjoys subjecting her friends to elaborate pranks. The pranks are always harmless, but Marceline likes it better when the prankee doesn’t know that.
As evidenced by her running off instead of actually talking to her father, Marceline doesn’t do well with serious emotional problems. It helps her a lot to write them out in song, no matter how trivial they might be, but at the end of the day that’s all she’s really doing about it. She doesn’t make much effort to go speak to the other party or patch things up, so she can sometimes come off as a little passive aggressive, especially if you only found out about her beef with you after you heard her singing about it in that club the other night...
Marceline hasn’t spoken to her father since she left, but she does miss him and genuinely wishes they could have had a better relationship. She’s stubborn, though, and refuses to contact him since she doesn’t think he’s changed at all.
APPEARANCE: Marceline is tall, even with both feet on the ground, and sort of lanky. As a result of her mutation, her skin is a light greyish-blue color and all of her teeth are very sharp, but her canines are more pronounced. She has long, long black hair—it extends past her feet when loose, though she frequently ties it up according to her mood.
POWERS: Marceline habitually hovers several inches off the ground instead of walking or sitting; it generally takes much less effort, and has the added benefit of being faster. She is also capable of unaided flight. Her shapeshifting manifests as having two possible end points (a bat monster of varying size, and a large tentacle monster) with the ability to sit at any point between those and her human form. Both forms are moderately powerful, although Marceline is much more likely to use them for pranking than anything else.
